El Sabinar is located in the north-western part of El Hierro, on the plateau called La Dehesa.


In this unusual place covered with an old, juniper forest, the trees took very amazing forms. Theirs today's shape is a result of the weather conditions, that dominate here. Over the centuries the trees were exposed to effect of the continuously blowing, north-eastern winds, which strength and intensity made their natural, vertical growth difficult and forced them to bend down to the ground. Their unnatural deformed and twisted shapes, that bring to mind the tormented trees, transformed this forest into the unique, immensely beautiful and fascinating place on the island.


The Juniper tree (in spanish: Sabina - hence the origin of the name of this place) is also one of the more important symbols of the island. Moreover, it is also numbered among the species under the special protection. While visiting El Sabinar it's necessary to remember, that collecting the wood from this place is strictly forbidden.

The easiest way leads along the El Golfo bay, that is: through Sabinos, Playa del Verodal and Faro de Orchilla. Behind it you should turn into direction to Ermita de los Reyes. From the chapel is only few kilometres to El Sabinar. The road asphalt in the beginning, then sandy.
