Villa de Santa María de Valverde, commonly known as Valverde is the capital of El Hierro. It is situated in the north-eastern part of the island on the altitude of about 600 metres above sea level, what makes it the only one among the all capitals of the Canary Islands archipelago located far from the coastline and which isn't connected with a seaport.


Before the Conquest in this place was situated the village of Bimbaches (the first settlers of the island), known as Amoco. Nowadays this small town is inhabited by a 1800 residents. The building is low - there's no buildings of more than 3-floors and there's no traffic lights. But, this is the place where are located all main institutions and offices of the island, such as: Cabildo Insular de Valverde, Delegación de Gobierno, court of justice. Also the public transport is on the rather high level and it's possible to get to the majority of places without any problem.



The most important, and as a matter of facts, the only monument of Valverde is the parish church of Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Concepción from 18th century. To this church, every four years takes place the famous Bajada Virgen de los Reyes, that is: the pilgrimage of the image of the island's patron saint from its sanctuary in La Dehesa. In its close vicinity towers a building of the Town Hall, which has a very interesting facade. Works on it began in 1910, but for the financial reasons it was finished only 30 years later. In the town are located also the Etnographic Museum "Casa de las Quinteras", where you can meet with a culture and the past of the island's inhabitants.
